Much of New Jersey falls in Zone 6, which means that plants need to be able to survive temperatures down to -5 degrees. While many plants may be able to withstand those temperatures, some may not look so good in the winter. Thankfully, there are a number of hardy plants that look good throughout each season. The following are just a few hardy, four season plants to add your landscape.
Athyrium Ghost
This hardy fern comes back year after year and offers a beautiful silver foliage throughout the year. Best suited to shade gardens, the fern offers some resistance against deers, but not complete resistance.
Buxus Green Velvet
This beautiful plant was bred in Canada and thrives in cold winter climates. Growing 3′ tall by 3′ wide, this hedge is perfect for shaping and is another plant that thrives in shady areas.
Thuja Emerald
Not only do these evergreen shrubs add beauty throughout the year, but this plant is extremely fragrant, making the trimmings perfect for holiday displays. Growing up to 7-8′ tall, these shrubs also offer great privacy and look wonderful dressed up in Christmas lights.
Burning Bush
Another great hedge to add to your landscape is the burning bush. The burning bush can withstand cold temperatures and provides beautiful yellow flowers in the summer, followed by 10+ weeks of fire engine-red color in the fall. Best of all, it’s a plant that you can use to hide air conditioner units and other unsightly hardware.
You don’t have to keep planting plants each and every year. There are a number of great plants that are hardy enough to survive the New Jersey winter. Not only that, but many of these plants will add beauty to your landscape all year long. Try pairing some of the smaller plants that have great greenery with plants that are colorful in the summer. This will give you great color no matter what the season.
