A typical New Jersey lawn
An extensive array of grass seeds accommodates the seasonal changes and differing sun exposures experienced in New Jersey. Both cool and warm season grasses are grown in our state, with cool season grasses being more common. Kentucky Bluegrass, perennial Ryegrass and fine Fescue can be found throughout the state.
Commonly used for lawns and golf courses, the Kentucky Bluegrass takes full sun. It’s popular for its rich green color and recuperative abilities. Kentucky Bluegrass doesn’t like heat or drought and can’t tolerate too much shade or salt. It tends to thatch and is susceptible to diseases. For these reasons, it is considered to be moderately high maintenance.
With pleasing dark green coloring, perennial Rye grasses are heat and drought tolerant and don’t thatch. However, ryes don’t do well in winter and suffer when flooded or are windblown. It’s also disease prone. Having a fine texture, Rye is easily mowed.
Fescue tends to be more shade and salt tolerant, as well as doing better when neglected. It is not prone to disease and is the last to brown out. It’s low maintenance. Being a fine-leafed variety, it is more difficult to mow.
With its transitional nature, some areas of central and southern New Jersey feature warm season Zoysia grass and even a bit of Bermuda. Beach areas are suggested for these varieties.
A pleasing variety of grass seed is available to the citizens of New Jersey. No matter if you reside near the beaches or in the mountains, a grass seed is available to suit the sun exposure and temperature changes your lawn will experience.
